Ingredients

  • 2tablespoonsolive oil

  • 7clovesgarlic, chopped

  • 1 ½cupschopped onion

  • 1 ½cupschopped green bell pepper

  • 3poundslean ground beef

  • 1(5 ounce) jargreen olives, pitted and halved

  • 5ouncescapers, rinsed, and drained

  • ¼cupwhite vinegar

  • 1teaspoonsalt

  • 1teaspoonfreshly ground black pepper

  • 1teaspoonground cinnamon

  • 1teaspoonground cloves

  • 2dried bay leaves

  • ¼teaspoonhot sauce

  • 6cupscanned tomatoes, half-drained

Cooking Directions

  1. In a large stock pot, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic, onion, and green pepper until onions are transparent. Transfer onion mixture to a bowl and set aside. In the same pot, heat remaining olive oil and brown ground beef.

  2. In a separate saucepan, combine olives, capers, vinegar, salt, pepper, cinnamon, cloves, bay leaves, and hot sauce. Let simmer over medium heat for 10 minutes.

  3. Place olive mixture and onion mixture into the pot with the ground beef. Add the half-drained tomatoes and cook for 1 hour over medium heat; occasionally stirring.

Tips

This dish can be served alone or with rice.
