Ingredients

  • 3cupsall-purpose flour

  • ¼cupwhite sugar

  • 4teaspoonsbaking powder

  • ¾teaspooncream of tartar

  • 1cupcold butter, cubed

  • cupheavy cream

  • 1largeegg, beaten

  • 3cupssliced fresh strawberries

  • 3tablespoonswhite sugar

Cooking Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Mix together flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, and cream of tartar in a large bowl. Cut in butter with a pastry blender or 2 knives. Stir in cream and egg until incorporated. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface.

  3. Knead dough for 2 minutes. Press into a 1/2-inch-thick sheet. Cut into squares and place on baking sheets.

  4. Bake in the preheated oven until golden, about 20 minutes. Allow shortcakes to cool.

  5. Place strawberries in a medium bowl. Sprinkle with sugar; stir to combine. Split cooled shortcakes in half and spread with sugared berries.
